Welcome Messages

Welcome Messages provide the ability to set a default message for new conversations or custom Welcome Messages for different referral paths, e.g. for users who click on Direct Message links present in a given Tweet.

Setting a default Welcome Message

  1. Create a new Welcome Message with POST direct_messages/welcome_messages/new. Take note of the returned Welcome Message ID.
  2. Create a new Welcome Message Rule using the Welcome Message ID with POST direct_messages/welcome_messages/rules/new.

Currently, you may only create one Rule. If a Rule has already been created, you must delete it first.

Deeplinking to a custom Welcome Message

  1. Create a new Welcome Message with POST direct_messages/welcome_messages/new. Take note of the returned Welcome Message ID.
  2. Add the recipient_id and welcome_message_id to the query string of the Direct Message deeplink.

Example:

https://twitter.com/messages/compose?recipient_id=2244994945&welcome_message_id=12345

This deep link can be used in Tweets or on websites. For more details on deeplinking to Direct Messages from a website, see Message Button documentation.
